Dr. Sabyasachi Mukherjee has served as Director General & Secretary, Board of Trustees of Mumbai’s
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) since 2007, transforming the century-old museum into a vibrant centre for art, heritage, and public learning. He also leads the CMVS Postgraduate Diploma Programme in Museology & Art Conservation, affiliated with the University of Mumbai.
Under his vision, the museum underwent extensive modernisation: refurbishment of the heritage building; setting up a state-of-the-art conservation centre; launching a Children’s Museum; creating an institutional archive; and adding new galleries and research initiatives. His leadership earned UNESCO’s Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards in 2010 and again in 2022.
Dr. Mukherjee has curated high-profile national and international exhibitions–such as “Mummy: The Inside Story” and collaborations with the British Museum–authored and overseen scholarly publications, and implemented significant conservation and archival projects like the Kahu-jo-Daro Stupa study.
He is an influential figure in the global museum community: a member of the Bizot Group, UK-AHRC steering committee, and a frequent lecturer. He has been honoured with numerous accolades, including an honorary Doctorate from the University of Edinburgh, Bombay Management Association’s Special Jury Mention (2016-17), the Citizen of Mumbai Award (2021-22), and election as an International Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2022).
With his ongoing advocacy for international collaboration and innovative public engagement, Dr. Mukherjee continues to redefine museum practice in India and beyond.
